Thank you, AUS Airport Ambassadors!

During National Volunteer Week from April 19 – 25, we took a moment to recognize our AUS Airport Ambassadors with a social media campaign and our in-terminal screens. We had a chance to sit down with volunteers Jeff, Simon, Kerry, and Shelley to chat about why they like volunteering and what the role means to them.

Many of our AUS Airport Ambassadors have previous aviation experience. Simon mentioned that when he was a kid, he’d look up at the planes and say, “I want to be there!” so made his way into aviation and been part of the industry for over 30 years. Kerry also previously worked at the airport back in 2001 with the Austin Police Department at the info desk. Kerry eventually came back in 2014 as a volunteer and has been with us ever since, seeing a lot of the Journey With AUS expansion growth along the way. And Shelley worked with JetBlue for 25 years before she started volunteering at AUS, bringing tons of airline knowledge to help passengers on the airport side.

When asked about why they enjoy volunteering, at the core it was about helping people and being a representative of not just the airport, but Austin itself.

Jeff mentioned that with first-time visitors to Austin, often their impression of the city comes from an AUS Airport Ambassador. Whether it’s a routine question like where car rentals are located or something more niche like local restaurant recommendations that can accommodate food allergies, starting off with a friendly tone and helpful nature showcases what Austin is all about. Shelley also mentioned that oftentimes people come up feeling stressed or anxious, so it’s truly impactful when you can turn that situation around. The AUS Airport Ambassador program is a unique way to share your love for the city and make traveling less stressful for passengers.

A big thank you to all our AUS Airport Ambassadors for helping passengers each and every day! If you have a question next time you’re in the terminal, feel free to stop by the info desk to chat with one of our friendly volunteers.
